Robyn - Be Mine (Verschwende Deine Jugend Remix)
One of my favorite pop acts out their right now would have to be Robyn. Rarely does someone have such a specific type of career so early on in life ("Show Me Love" and "Do You Know What it Takes"), and can still manage to come back in a very strong, yet different manner, and still remain successful.
At first I was reluctant to buy into Robyn's re-birth, but its the type of sound that tends to grow on you, the same way someone like Annie does.

The Beeb Blog.com's Halloween Interview: DANGEROUS MUSE
The Beeb Blog.com loves Halloween.So, naturally we sought out fellow fanatics, Tom Napack and Mike Furey of electropop duo Dangerous Muse, as they prepare for the ultimate Halloween party themselves. The boys share with us some of their favorite Halloween pastimes, aswell as a few things they wish they hadn't seen:
T: I remember back in kindergarden my elementary school had a parade
in which every kid in costume walked across the assembly stage and was
judged by their costumes. I had seen a lot of classic monster movies
by that time but Dracula was my favorite. I made my mom make me (not
buy) a Dracula costume complete with cape, fangs, and white makeup. I
suppose that's probably my earliest memory of wearing makeup as well.
Oh and I won the best costume for my class.
M: I remember lugging huge pillow cases full of candy around freezing
cold streets. I grew up in Maine, so whatever costume you wore had to
allow you to also wear a full-on sweat suit and jacket UNDERNEATH it.
There were lots of fat vampires.
What do you think is going to be a huge costume this year?
T: This year it's all about Britney.
M: Britney goes without saying. But I think for the guys some Pirates
of the Caribbean shit will be going down. Typical.
What are two films you might pull out around Halloween?
T: I love horror and vampire movies so it's hard to say which only
come out for Halloween. I usually try to watch some slasher films that
I haven't seen, I just saw Hellraiser II this week. It was so
good-bad.
M: I'm a fan of twisted movies more so than straight up horror films,
but I do love the "Halloween" series. That piano riff is so sick. I'll
probably be pulling something else out on Halloween, though.
Arrrrrreow! -- Alright then, whats the worst costume you've ever seen, and why?
T: The worst costume I ever saw was a kid dressed as an alien. He had
a big white mesh helmet on and was dressed from head to toe
in white clothing. He really just looked like a giant 14 year old
condom.
M: I always hate it when guys cross dress on Halloween almost as an
excuse to exercise their desires to wear hosery. It's like give me a
fucking break. If you wanna wear panties, do it on an off day. Dare to
be more of a freak on Halloween.
Whats the worst costumed you've ever donned, and why?
T: The worst costume I ever wore was "goth-rocker." Not that anyone
else thought it was bad but for me to walk around with a guitar,
dressed in all black with eye make up really just isn't a stretch and
I think Halloween costumes should not be taken from your everyday
life.
M: I tend to block out bad experiences in my life, including terrible costumes.
What are your top 3 all-time Halloween jams?
T: Well for me "Every Day is Halloween," but right now I've been
listening to Ministry's "Twitch." Maybe that's Halloween-y. I live right
next to a college campus so if I were going to be home this year,
maybe I would give out jell-o shots and play The Devil's Rejects
Soundtrack. That's pretty scary.
M: I definitely don't have Halloween jams. But I do love Thriller.
Tell us a bit about this Halloween bash you're performing at this week:
M: We are going to be performing the Josh Harris club edit of our
cover "Every Day is Halloween" at our favorite Halloween party in New
York City, thrown by Susanne Bartsch, on Halloween Night. The party
will take place at Avalon (the old Lime Light, where Party Monster
Michael Alig threw his parties before he went to prison). The space is
a converted gothic church with lots of stained glass and cathedral
ceilings -- perfect for a legendary Halloween party. We are expecting
between 2,500 and 3,000 people. $20 at the door. There will be witches
flying on broomsticks (literally), an enchanted forest, and freaks
galore. We will be performing from a suspended scaffolding hanging in
the middle of the crowd. The party is going to be abosolutely insane.

When the folks over at K7! Records decided to let two non-DJs take a crack at putting out a DJ-Kicks, there might not be two people better suited for this task. Self-admitted, Berlin’s Booka Shade (Arno Kammermeier and Walter Merziger) are not DJs. They are, however, producers, musicians, remixers and label owners (Get Physical). But still, that doesn’t make them DJs, does it? Apparently, by the magic of osmosis, Booka Shade can, in fact, DJ with the best of them. The duo took the time to chat with Ground Control to talk about their beginnings as a production team, their roles in the band, and most of all, what it was like making a DJ mix for a prolific DJ series without being, well, a DJ.
What were some of your earliest musical influences?EXPAND POST/READ MORE
Walter: All the music that came out of Britain in the early 80s was very influential, bands like The Smiths, New Order, The Cure, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode…
How did the two of you meet and when did you begin to work on music together?
Arno: The classic version: we met in a school band!! Walter played guitar and I played drums. We played cultural highlights of contemporary music such as Van Halen’s “Jump” or “Davy’s on the Road Again” by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. We were 14 years old when we met and, as you can see, had great style!! It quickly “clicked” and we realized that we wanted to achieve something in music, so we met in the afternoons and started to set up a studio. Our first proud piece of recording equipment was a CASSETTE RECORDER!
When you first began your productions, what style of music did you make? What equipment were you using?
Walter: We saved as much money as we could and invested in a Commodore 64 computer, which was hi-tech at that time. After a while we could also afford a Korg Poly 800 and DW 8000 and we borrowed a Roland JX3P from a friend. Our very first drum machine was an analogue preset Roland machine, later on a Korg DDD1. We wrote songs in the 80s synth-pop style, a bit tears for fears-like.
What were/are your individual roles as producers?
Arno: Walter’s the guy who spends all his time in the studio. He’s the one who comes up with the basic song and sound ideas. I’m very much involved in the daily business around Booka Shade, like communication, contracts, also for our label, Get Physical. In the afternoon we meet in the studio and discuss new ideas and decide how to continue. Many times we start jam sessions or so, playing around with the instruments and recording ideas. The evening is the most enjoyable time in the studio. When the phone stops ringing and it gets quiet and you can dive into the music…
Where did the name "Booka Shade" come from?
Walter: It’s fiction! When we looked for a project name in the mid-90s for a release on a Dutch label, Touché, we flipped pages in a magazine and came up with “booka” or it may even have been “booker,” and something with “shade” on the other page. We just thought it sounded good. In the beginning, many people thought we might come from Asia, because the name has this Asian touch.
The music in your live set is much more upbeat and crowd friendly than your album tracks. Do make special tracks just for your live sets or remixes of existing material?
Arno: Yes we do! Especially in the beginning, on the Memento tour 2005, we played the songs in a much pushier way then on the album. Both of us are quite energetic persons, we have a lot of energy to give, and I think that’s what’s appealing for a lot of people. There’s definitely a difference between Booka Shade the recording / album act and Booka Shade the live band. And that’s cool! Even today we always have around 40% unreleased songs in the live show, partly to keep the shows interesting for ourselves and partly to create certain emotions in the show. On track especially would be far too hard and pushing for an album, but it works for the show.
The live drum pads add a great element, which seems to really engage the audience. How difficult was that to incorporate into your live set? Are there any plans to add more members to the live act?
Walter: Seeing Arno play the drums is a lot of fun (you see it’s very exhausting, too!!!) I can’t think of many drummers who play the way that Arno plays, with such energy, dancing around. It fits quite naturally in the set, because it was clear from the first second on that we would have a drum set. At the moment there are no plans to bring in additional people. There’s a lot the two of us can still try out on stage.
What were some of your favorite cities, clubs and best crowd reactions during your recent world tours?
Arno: Roskilde in Denmark, Sonar in Spain, Pukkelpop in Belgium, and the Detroit electronic music festival. We were given the chance to play the last slot of the whole festival, just before Jeff Mills. For sure a big highlight!!!! Playing in Eastern European countries like Romania, Serbia or Croatia is very exciting. There’s a lot of enthusiasm for electronic music there. We went to Australia earlier this year for the first time and will go back in December. We had a wonderful time there, lots of fans!!
The two of you are not known as DJs, in fact, I’m not sure if you DJ in clubs at all. So what was your process in making the recent DJ-Kicks mix?
Walter: You’re right, we’re not playing as DJs in clubs. But the idea to put together and mix a compilation was always appealing to us. We wanted to push boundaries a bit and not only beat-match songs, but also do things production-wise that would be impossible in a classic turntable mix. We cut songs, let them run over each other for the length of a whole song, pitched and tweaked tracks…great fun!
DJ series’ such as DJ-Kicks have been around for a while now. Have you been approached to do mixes before this one, and what made you guys agree to it in the end?
Arno: For example, doing a Body Language compilation on our own Get Physical label wouldn’t have been so interesting for us, because it’s a bit more club orientated. The DJ-Kicks comp is for home listening—you can show a broader style of sound. It was perfect for us.
Also, since you seem to only play your own music live, did you find it easy or difficult to make this mix? From the tracklist, it looks like you were just making a dope mixtape for your closest friends.
Walter: Ha ha! Yeah, in a way it was like looking for your most favorite songs in your record collection. We wanted to try and combine very different styles, like for example Brigitte Bardot, and still make it sound cool and modern. We wanted to show where we come from and what kind of music we like. And we DO like all different kinds of music.
I noticed John Carpenter twice your mix and this seems very fitting of your sound. Have your guys ever worked or planned to work on any soundtrack / film scores?
ARNO: We love soundtracks, film scores, and we love creating music for moving pictures. When we recorded our first album, Memento, we mainly worked at night, and we put movies in the DVD player and muted the sound, so we could write music to the pictures we saw. It was a great experience. And we did and still do music for films and cool ads. For example, KSWISS and Levis took songs of ours for their ads.
What is in the works for Booka Shade in the next year?
WALTER: We’re currently in the studio, recording the third album. The Movements world tour will be finished in November. We’ll have played 165 shows then. We hope to have the album out in May 2008 and get ready for a next, bigger world tour!!!

A few weeks back we shared a couple remixes from Cousin Cole, who we said had helped turn some pretty bland hiphop tracks into something spectacular.
This week CC sent us his brand new remix of "OMG We Got It" by Venezuelan/Brooklyn band, Todosantos.
The remix is a bit different from past work by Cousin Cole, which is a bit more "disco-acid" than his usual stuff, but good none-the-less.
You can buy the song on the Acid Girlzzz Vinyl EP out now on Flamin Hotz, a translucent yellow and red vinyl which comes complete with 3D glasses, and a free DVD.

Radiohead Be Filthy Rich
No one was really sure how it would work when Radiohead decided to release their new album In Rainbows via the Internet with a "pay what you want" approach.Well, the method proved to be very lucrative for the band, who have pulled in around $9.6 million in sales, despite the people who refuse to pay anything.
The British music newsletter Record of the Day conducted a poll of 3,000 purchasers of the album. People paid an average price of £4, about $8, the newsletter found.
Because the band isn't working with a record label, it gets to keep all that money. If it had sold its songs instead on iTunes, it would likely have seen less than $1.50 per album.
Which means that if all these numbers are right -- 1.2 million units at $8 each -- Thom Yorke and his pals are seeing a lot of green right now.

Retropost: Magazine - Because You're Frightened
When October hits, I basically turn into a 5 year old again and all things seem point to Halloween. Over the next month, if you think you see a pattern, you're probably right.I know most people scurry last minute to throw together some sort of mix together for their night out and their DJ sets, so rather than do that, we'll just ease into it nicely.
Heres an upbeat little number by English Post-punk group Magazine, which was formed after Howard Devoto left Buzzcocks in 1976.
"Because You're Frightened" is nice because it isn't the obvious track that you hear at every party. Sometimes shit can get real stale.

The self-proclaimed non-DJs, but rather Get Physical label founders and producers/remixers of such bands as Depeche Mode, Roxy Music, Tiga and Moby -- are releasing both a brand new Booka Shade DJ-Kicks, AND an EP.
Their DJ-Kicks will feature artists like Aphex Twin, Matthew Dear, The Streets, John Carpenter, Carl Craig, and Yazoo.

NEW Andreas Kleerup - Nike+ Original Run Mix
First there were The Crystal Method & LCD Soundystem "Nike+ Original Run" mixes made for the new Nike+Ipod.
Now Nike is set add two new mixes to their campaign, which will include Sweden's Kleerup who produced Robyn's "With Every Heartbeat", and New York's Aesop Rock.
Alot of people complained that although the previous mixes were great, it didn't compel them to use it while running and working out. Hopefully the new installments can do just that.

NEW The Arcade Fire & LCD Soundsystem - Split 7" EP
Tourmates The Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem have been offering a 7" at their concert which features two previously unreleased tracks.
While LCD covers Joy Division's "No Love Lost", The Arcade Fire cover a song that Serge Gainsbourg wrote for popular French yé-yé singer France Gall, which she performed at a Eurovision concert way back in 1965. (See below)

TheBeebBlog.com correspondent Jeff Lawrence, and 80's-disco-synthsation MIAMI HORROR, got to chatting recently to discuss the Melbourne DJ/Producer's upcoming Bravado EP, producing Gameboy/Gamegirl's upcoming release, aswell as to talk about everything from Melbourne's nightlife, to "Blog House", and even special rum balls.
BB: It's seems apparent that you have taken your name from a movie epitomizing what ruled about the 80's. Is that what you're setting out to do with your music, and why?EXPAND POST/READ MORE
MH: Actually, I didn't take my name from a movie, it was a combination of influences and I don't want it to represent the movie or specifically only the 80s. I like the fact that it gives that certain feel to some as the movie is relevant to my style in someways, however with my music I am setting out to create a combination of everything I like about music, I want people to be able to feel more than just the vibration on their ear drums.
I do like alot of retro pop such as 60s rock, 70s and 80s disco classics as they are not fitting to any modern genre and some songs are timeless. I am trying to create music that anyone can feel and enjoy, whether it be in a club or at home, whether they be 6yr old or 55yr old and whether it be now or in 10yrs..
BB: What's happening in Melbourne right now, and for those of us on this side of the world, what is LICK IT?
MH: Melbourne is amazing, it is a very small tight community and alot of people are creative. The music that is coming out of it is at a high standard in relation to population size and will continue to boom for many years to come. What I like most is Melbourne pushes its own direction rather than necessarily trying to copy everything else out there, there is a very nice sound traveling underground in Melbourne and I think the world needs to listen even closer than they already are.
Lickit was initially a cool night that was run up in Brisbane qld but has recently been brought down to Melbourne. They tour some of the smaller -medium indie electro acts, such as Guns And Bombs, Data and D.I.M. For one of their next events they are holding it in an old theatre out of the city which I think is great as it will have alot more character than some of the tedious club nights.
BB: What was in your mind when you were putting together "Don't Be On With Her?" That song still kills everyone, every time I play it!
MH: I just started it from a feeling,and made it very quickly.. It is one of the first songs I was totally happy with because it is a complete summary of one particular style I love. It also seems to have the effect I mentioned above and even some of the 'cheesy music' haters love it. So I'm glad it has the cross effect -- P.S. Its not finished yet, and hopefully will sound alot better.
BB: How did you hook up with Curtis Vodka, and tell us about TIGRTRON? (What kind of sound you are going for, etc) When will some tracks be released?
MH: He just contacted me and I knew about his stuff so was very excited about working with him.. We were going for both a horror soundtrack style and a funky fun 80s boogie style. We have some half finished tracks that we may get back around to, the problem at the moment is I have had to push it to the side for sake of finishing my own EP and Gameboy/Gamegirl's EP. I am also working on a track to get it out before the Australian summer with Grafton Primary.. It is called "Music is Magic", and it is one of my favorite tracks I have ever worked and if everyone had my taste in music it would be huge :) So keep a very keen eye out for that, it is very fun!
BB: Any plans to come to North America soon?
MH: Yeah I am coming to LA and NY with a SanFran detour. I will be in LA from the 21st-27th and in NY from 28th-2nd, playing DJ sets around the place. I am supporting Digitalism on 26th in SanFran if things work out with visas. I am still looking for more gigs to play at. I have made several friends in LA and am extremely excited about partying down there!
BB: Bravado is coming out soon, describe it in 5-7 words:

BB: What is BLOG HOUSE?
MH: Well apparently it is dance music that is posted on blogs, however I don't really think you can define a music genre simply because the track was posted on a blog. I just find it annoying when people say they play "blog house" 1. its not house. 2. Just because it was posted on a blog doesn't mean anyone knows exactly what style it is.
BB: "Short Dick Man" - best song to come out of the 90's?
MH: According to the GBGG kids.
BB: Craziest party story?
MH: Buying these 'special' rum balls from this lady in Byron Bay before the massive splendour in the grass festival. The consequence was me freaking out for the rest of the night and speaking crap to important people I shouldn't be speaking crap to.
